The following media note was published by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs on June 15. It is reproduced in full below.

Acting Assistant Secretary for Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs Jennifer R. Littlejohn will lead a U.S. delegation, to New York, New York, to mark the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) global observance day on June 16.

The delegation, including representatives from the Department of the Interior, will join international counterparts to build global momentum to strengthen women’s land rights - a crucial component in addressing the desertification challenges faced by many countries. Evidence shows that promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment leads to more effective environmental solutions, including addressing land degradation challenges and boosting agricultural productivity.

Acting Assistant Secretary Littlejohn will deliver the United States statement and meet with stakeholders to reinforce the United States’ continuing commitment to advancing gender equity and equality in conjunction with efforts that proactively build resilience and preparedness. The public portion of the event will be live-streamed at: https://media.un.org/en/asset/k1i/k1ix8i8j1z For media inquiries, please contact OES-PA-DG@state.gov.
