The following Press Statement was published by the U.S Department of State, Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs on Aug. 20. It is reproduced in full below.

On behalf of the United States of America, I wish the people of Hungary a happy Saint Stephen’s Day as you celebrate over a thousand years of history as a nation.

The American and Hungarian people are united in our fundamental commitment to democratic values and rule of law, collective security, and prosperity. It is on this basis that we look forward to increasing our cooperation on shared challenges at an important moment.

The relationship between Hungary and the United States is too important not to do everything we can to ensure the actions of our governments fully reflect the strong historic ties between our nations and our tremendous potential to address the challenges of our day, together as NATO Allies.

It is my hope that the partnership between our governments and our peoples only grows stronger and more productive in the year ahead.
