The following Press Statement was published by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs on Aug. 17. It is reproduced in full below.

On behalf of the United States of America, I extend our congratulations to the people of Indonesia on the occasion of your Independence Day.

The United States and Indonesia enjoy a strong strategic partnership enhanced by our shared commitment to democracy and the close ties between our peoples. I commend Indonesia’s work in facilitating growth and building a resilient future through your Chairmanship of ASEAN this year. I was pleased to participate in the U.S.-ASEAN Post-Ministerial Conference, East Asia Summit Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, and ASEAN Regional Forum, as well as the U.S.-Indonesia Strategic Dialogue, in Jakarta in July. The United States looks forward to many more years of collaboration as we work towards a free and open, stable, and prosperous Indo-Pacific.

We send the people of Indonesia our best wishes as you celebrate this joyous Independence Day.
