The following Press Statement was published by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of African Affairs on Aug. 17. It is reproduced in full below.

On behalf of the United States, I would like to congratulate the people of Gabon on the 63rd anniversary of your independence.

The United States stands ready to work directly with Gabon as it strives to diversify its economy, strengthen its maritime security, and counter illicit trafficking of its natural resources. Our bilateral resolve to promote United States-Gabon trade, bolster Gabon’s security capacity, and further develop conservation efforts demonstrates our shared vision for a safe and prosperous Gabon. By protecting the Congo Basin and combatting wildlife and timber trafficking, in addition to holding the “One Forest" Summit in March, Gabon is playing an invaluable role in environmental conservation and the fight against climate change.

We look forward to reinforcing our partnership with Gabon on promoting peace, security, and respect for human rights through the United Nations Security Council and United Nations Human Rights Council. In the coming year, we will continue to support Gabon’s efforts to promote gender equality and respect for human rights as well as expand our economic partnership.

We extend our best wishes for the people of Gabon and look forward to building a stronger partnership.
