Washington, D.C. - House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Michael McCaul (R-TX), Ranking Member Gregory W. Meeks (D-NY), Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere Chairwoman Maria Salazar (R-FL), and Ranking Member Joaquin Castro (D-TX) issued the following statement expressing outrage and calling for an investigation and prosecution of the assassination of Ecuadorian presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio.

“We are outraged and deeply saddened by the assassination of Ecuadorian presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio. As a journalist, Villavicencio was one of Ecuador’s most critical voices against corruption and criminality. We stand with the people of Ecuador in this time of mourning and vow to support a full investigation and prosecution of this senseless act of violence."
