House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Michael McCaul released the following statement on reports that Ben Hu, a researcher at the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) who was conducting gain-of-function research on coronaviruses at dangerously unsafe biosafety levels, was one of three scientists who were ill with COVID-like symptoms in November 2019.

“As I said in August of 2021 when I released the addendum to my Origins of COVID report: all roads lead to the lab. It is far past time for President Biden to use all of the tools the U.S. government has to finally confirm COVID-19 leaked from the WIV and was allowed to become a global pandemic. This was the greatest coverup of all time and has caused the deaths of millions of people around the world. People – both those in China and those in the U.S. who aided their coverup – must be held responsible.”
