Vietnam ranks among the top five countries in the world most vulnerable to climate change. The area under the greatest threat is Vietnam’s Mekong Delta in the south, home to one-fifth of the country’s population. Through the first direct grant to a Vietnamese public university, USAID and Can Tho University (CTU), the leading university in the Mekong Delta, are partnering to advance climate change education and action in the region.

EMPOWER YOUTH TO TACKLE CLIMATE CHANGE

USAID and CTU’s DRAGON-Mekong Institute, a climate change research institute, are conducting workshops and outreach activities through the Environmental Education Program to develop the knowledge, skills, and capabilities of young people in the Mekong region to better understand and collaborate to address climate change. The project focuses on common regional issues, as well as unique issues affecting coastal and inland provinces.

EXPECTED RESULTS

The project will support approximately 300 youth across the 13 Mekong Delta provinces to take collective action to address climate change and environmental issues that are relevant to their local context. USAID’s partnership with CTU also bolsters the university’s leadership role in locally-led development in the Mekong Delta.
