U.S. Senator Jim Risch (R-Idaho), ranking member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, today released the following statements on committee passage of legislation on Eswatini and human trafficking.

Eswatini Resolution

“Today’s committee passage of S.Res.174 shows Congress has not forgotten the assassination of Thulani Maseko and is aware of the dire human rights situation in Eswatini,” said Risch. “I will continue to encourage an independent and credible investigation into Maseko’s murder. The Eswatini people deserve accountability.”

International Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act of 2023

“In order to ensure human traffickers are properly investigated, prosecuted, and held accountable globally, Congress must ensure the State Department has the tools necessary to help support other countries,” said Risch. “The TVPRA will make critical reforms to increase oversight over U.S. anti-trafficking programs and help prevent further human trafficking.”

The International Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act of 2023 was introduced on March 22, 2023. Text of the legislation as introduced can be found here.
