Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield to lead U.S. Delegation to the 2nd Session of the UN Permanent Forum on People of African Descent

The United States Mission to the United Nations today announced the U.S. delegation to the 2nd Session of the UN Permanent Forum on People of African Descent (PFPAD), to be held May 30 to June 2 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.

The theme of this year’s session is “Realizing the Dream: A UN Declaration on the Promotion, Protection, and Full Respect of the Human Rights of People of African Descent.”

Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield will deliver the U.S. statement on Tuesday, May 30.

Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Michael Regan will deliver a keynote address during the opening session; Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, the representative from Texas, will deliver a keynote address during the closing.

Desirée Cormier Smith, the U.S. Special Representative for Racial Equity and Justice, will serve as an Alternate Representative.

The Biden-Harris Administration is committed to strengthening the dialogue between U.S. officials and people of African descent, which is why we were instrumental in launching the PFPAD. The United States nominated Howard University Law Professor Justin Hansford to serve as an independent expert on the PFPAD, and he was elected by the UN General Assembly for the inaugural 2022-2024 term.
