Readout of Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield’s Meeting with UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Martin Griffiths

Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield, U.S. Representative to the United Nations, met today with UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Martin Griffiths. Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield commended United Nation’s leadership in marshalling resources for the Sudanese people and emphasized the need to ensure safe and unhindered humanitarian access for organizations in Sudan providing life-saving assistance to the most vulnerable and those displaced due to the fighting.
Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield underscored the ongoing imperative to ensure the humanitarian community continues to have expanded access to populations in Syria devastated by war and the recent earthquake and stressed the need for the UN Security Council to extend cross-border access for an additional 12 months. Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield also discussed the dire humanitarian situation in Myanmar following Tropical Cyclone Mocha and the critical role of the Black Sea Grain Initiative in ensuring food reaches vulnerable populations.
