Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield to Lead U.S. Delegation to Council of Europe Summit in Reykjavik, Iceland
Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield, U.S. Representative to the United Nations, will travel to Reykjavik, Iceland May 15-17 where she will lead the U.S. delegation to the Fourth Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Council of Europe. In addition to Council of Europe programming, Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield will meet with European officials, including Icelandic representatives, and engage civil society and entrepreneurs working in the fields of human rights, gender equality, renewable energy, and climate adaptation.
As head of the U.S. delegation to the Council of Europe Fourth Summit, Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield will join world leaders from nearly 50 countries to discuss the protection of human rights, democracy, and the rule of law amidst threats stemming from Russia’s war in Ukraine, as well as democratic backsliding around the world.
The Council of Europe was established in 1949 to promote human rights, democracy, and the rule of law. Based in Strasbourg, France, it includes 46 Member States, 27 of which are members of the European Union. The United States participates as an Observer State.
