The following press release was published by the Matthew Miller, Department Spokesperson on June 2. It is reproduced in full below.

The Republic of Korea hosted the High-Level Political Meeting in commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the Proliferation Security Initiative (PSI) on May 30, 2023. This meeting reviewed the actions implemented by PSI-endorsing States over the past 20 years, assessed the proliferation challenges we face presently and provided direction to PSI to meet these challenges over the next five years.

As a Presidential Initiative, the PSI, which currently has 106 participating countries, has been strongly supported by every U.S. administration since the Initiative’s inception and remains a key element of the global weapons of mass destruction nonproliferation regime. The United States encourages all states that support the Initiative’s counterproliferation goals, including interdicting illicit shipments of WMD, their delivery systems, and related items, to join the PSI by endorsing the PSI Statement of Interdiction Principles and participating in future PSI events and activities.
