The following press release was published by the House Committee on Foreign Affairs on May 18. It is reproduced in full below.

Washington, D.C. - House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Michael McCaul (R-TX) and Europe Subcommittee Chairman Thomas Kean, Jr. (R-NJ) issued the following statement the Day of Commemoration of the victims of the genocide of the Crimean Tatars.

“On this Day of Commemoration of the victims of the genocide of the Crimean Tatars, we condemn the Russian Federation’s continued efforts to destroy Ukraine and deny its peoples their right to life and liberty. Today memorializes the hundreds of thousands of Crimean Tatars deported under Soviet tyranny, and the tens of thousands who died during deportation and in exile. Russia’s repression continues with forced conscriptions, persecution of political dissidents, and violations of the indigenous populations’ human rights, but will never erase one immutable fact: Crimea will always be Ukraine."
