Washington, D.C. - House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Michael McCaul issued the following statement on introducing the Project Precursor Act. This bill would help address America’s fentanyl epidemic by seeking to add fentanyl to the chemical weapons convention, working with the Mexican government to disrupt the fentanyl supply chains, countering Chinese fentanyl operations in Mexico, and taking significant steps to strengthen global law enforcement cooperation and U.S. sanctions against synthetic drug trafficking.
“Stemming from illicit precursors made in China, America’s fentanyl crisis is the deadliest narcotics epidemic in U.S. history, killing nearly 200 Americans every day. We must recognize the toll this crisis is taking on our country - a lethal drug like fentanyl exploits the most vulnerable members of society, and we owe it to future generations to stop traffickers from poisoning our communities. I am committed to working with our international partners to confront this crisis head-on and save lives with my Project Precursor Act."
