The following press release was published by the House Committee on Foreign Affairs on May 8. It is reproduced in full below.

Washington, D.C. - House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Michael McCaul (R-TX) and Ranking Member Gregory W. Meeks (D-NY) issued the following statement condemning the Arab League’s decision to re-admit Bashar Al-Assad.

“Readmitting Assad to the Arab League is a grave strategic mistake that will embolden Assad, Russia, and Iran to continue butchering civilians and destabilizing the Middle East. Assad and his backers faced no accountability for murdering hundreds of thousands of Syrians and detaining and torturing tens of thousands more, using chemical weapons, brutally bombing Syria into oblivion, and undermining regional security through narcotrafficking. Assad has not changed - he will continue these atrocities, while setting a global precedent that ruthless dictators can wait out accountability for their crimes. The United States must fully enforce the Caesar Act and other sanctions to freeze normalization efforts with this war criminal."
