The following press release was published by the House Committee on Foreign Affairs on May 3. It is reproduced in full below.

Washington, D.C.- House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Michael McCaul (R-TX) and Subcommittee on the Middle East, North Africa, and Central Asia Chairman Joe Wilson (R-SC) issued the following statement in response to reports of Bashar al Assad potentially being readmitted to the Arab League.

“We are deeply alarmed by the ongoing efforts to facilitate Bashar al Assad’s reintegration into the Arab League. In April, the House Foreign Affairs Committee held a hearing that included eyewitness testimony from the Grave Digger attesting to the Assad regime’s war crimes. Rehabilitating an unrepentant war criminal ensures the regime will continue to bomb Syrians, undermine stability, and let Russia and Iran run rampant in Syria. We urge our partners not to continue down this path of normalization."
