Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken met with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres today in Washington.  Secretary Blinken and Secretary-General Guterres discussed the importance of continuing to safeguard the UN Charter in light of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine.  The Secretary expressed appreciation to Secretary-General Guterres for his efforts to renew and strengthen the Black Sea Grain Initiative.  On Sudan, Secretary Blinken pledged to continue to work with the Secretary-General to press for a permanent cessation of hostilities, to protect civilians, and to ensure humanitarian access for UN agencies.  The Secretary reiterated U.S. support for an inclusive government and ensuring respect for women and girls in light of the Taliban’s latest restrictions on Afghan women working with the UN. Secretary Blinken also underscored to the Secretary General resolute U.S. support for the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
