On April 18, Assistant Secretary Lee Satterfield will deliver remarks at The 28th National Capitol Forum on Hispanic Higher Education. The Capitol Forum is a policy meeting for promoting Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) initiatives and the full agenda is here.  The Assistant Secretary will join Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, U.S. Department of Homeland Security Assistant Secretary for Partnership and Engagement Brenda Abdelall, and Chairwomen of the Export-Import Bank of the United States Reta Jo Lewis in a session on “Building Federal Partnerships and Securing Opportunities for HSIs”.

he State Department and HACU have a long-standing relationship. In October 2022, the U.S. Department of State renewed its Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with HACU, as part of its celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month and its long-standing commitment to the Hispanic community.  The signing by Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken and HACU President Antonio Flores, Ph.D., reinforced the Department’s aim to increase diversity, equity, inclusion, accessibility, and support for traditionally underserved communities in the United States. For more than 20 years through this agreement, the Department and HACU have been working to attract Hispanic students to internships, fellowships, and careers in the foreign affairs community.  Encouraging more diverse scholars and students to apply for Department of State programs and activities such as the Fulbright Program, Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program, Critical Language Scholarships, and more, raises awareness of these opportunities for students, faculty, and staff at HACU member institutions to study and learn abroad.

The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities, founded in 1986, represents more than 500 colleges and universities in the United States, Latin America, Spain, and school districts throughout the U.S. HACU is the only national association representing existing and emerging Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs). The Association’s headquarters are in San Antonio, Texas, with regional offices in Washington, D.C. and Sacramento, California.
