Tanzania is endowed with rich biodiversity and iconic wild animals such as giraffes, elephants, and lions. With over 14,000 wildlife species, Tanzania also hosts 25% of globally renowned biodiversity hotspots. Wildlife is important for the national economy and community livelihoods, as wildlife-based tourism comprises approximately nine percent of Tanzania’s gross domestic product and 25 percent of its foreign exchange earnings.
USAID and its partners work to conserve threatened wildlife habitat in Tanzania and reduce poaching of iconic wildlife species, however the pervasive rural poverty, unsustainable natural resource management, and weak environmental resource governance capacity threaten biodiversity conservation.
