BACKGROUND

Corruption, a lack of accountability, and limited transparency in North Macedonia erode trust in institutions. Corruption is caused by a combination of factors, including minimal political will; impunity and a lack of the rule of law; institutional underperformance; and the limited capacity, oversight, collaboration, and communication of institutions. In addition, public apathy and acceptance of corruption as “part of the system” contribute to the prevalence of corruption.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Anti-corruption and Integrity Activity works with the Government of North Macedonia, the State Commission for Prevention of Corruption, the State Audit Office, and other institutions to improve the capacity to monitor governance, and initiate actions to address and effectively combat corruption. Together, we work toward establishing and streamlining oversight of political processes and governance, including political party financing. Our efforts will increase governmental transparency and accountability.

EXPECTED RESULTS AND IMPACT

  • Anti-corruption bodies and key institutions will have greater capacity to conduct proper oversight and scrutiny of institutions that spend public funds.
  • Oversight bodies will be more able to promote political integrity.
  • Citizens will have a better understanding of the effects of and how they can counter corruption.
