Today, the UN Security Council discussed the Burma military’s April 11 airstrike in the Sagaing region that killed more than 130 people and injured dozens of others, including children.

The United States condemns this latest attack by the Burma military regime, which is yet another example of its disregard for human life and international law. We reiterate our call on the regime to cease all forms of violence, allow unhindered humanitarian access, and respect the genuine and inclusive democratic aspirations of the people of Burma. The regime must abide by its obligations under international humanitarian law, including rules on the protection of civilians.

The Security Council must support the full implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 2669 and ASEAN’s Five Point Consensus and promote justice and accountability for the atrocities and abuses committed by Burma’s military regime.

The United States will continue to support peace, human rights, and the establishment of a path toward a genuine and inclusive, multi-party democracy in Burma through our work with members of the Security Council, other UN Member States, and regional partners, including ASEAN.
